“Google Rolls Out Advanced Android Theft Protection Features to Enhance Device Security”

After announcing at I/O 2024, Google has officially started rolling out a trio of powerful theft protection features for Android 10+ devices via Google Play Services. These security tools are designed to safeguard your personal data in case your device is stolen, offering peace of mind with real-time protections.

To enable these features, simply search for “Theft Protection” in your Android device’s Settings app, or navigate to the newly revamped Google Services page by heading to All Services > Personal & Device Safety.

What’s New in Theft Protection for Android?

Theft Detection Lock: Leveraging device sensors, Wi-Fi, and smart connections, this feature detects when someone suddenly snatches your phone while it’s in use and unlocked. If that happens, your phone automatically locks, blocking access to your personal data.

Offline Device Lock: Even if a thief disables your internet connection to prevent location tracking, Offline Device Lock steps in. This feature triggers under two conditions:

You are actively using the phone when it’s unlocked.

The screen lock can be activated up to two times per day.

Remote Lock: If your phone is stolen, visit android.com/lock using a trusted device. This feature lets you call a specific number you provided during setup after a security challenge. Google believes this method is faster and more efficient than using Find My Device.

Where is it Available?

Google started testing these features in Brazil back in June, and now Android users across the globe—including Pixel and Samsung users—are gradually receiving them. However, the full launch isn’t here just yet. Currently, those enrolled in the Google Play Services beta (version 24.40.33) are seeing all three features, but they haven’t hit the stable channel for most users.

This rollout marks a significant step in Android’s commitment to security, providing robust, real-time protection that adapts to modern threats. Keep an eye out for the full launch and make sure to update your device to stay protected with these cutting-edge theft detection tools.
