BYD’s New Car Carrier Sets Sail with 5,000 EVs Bound for Europe

BYD’s New Car Carrier ‘Changzhou’ Joins Fleet with 5,000 Electric Vehicles Headed for Europe

BYD, one of the leading names in electric mobility, is stepping up its game in the international market. The company has officially launched its new car carrier, BYD Changzhou, which has set sail with 5,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) destined for Europe. This strategic expansion further enhances BYD’s logistics capabilities, reinforcing its ambition to be a dominant player in the global EV market.

BYD Changzhou: Expanding EV Logistics

The latest addition to BYD’s shipping fleet, the BYD Changzhou, is now fully operational. Announced today by Wang Junbao, the general manager of BYD Corporate Division, the vessel embarked on its journey after loading up at the ports of Lianyungang and Taicang in Jiangsu province. Junbao shared the news via Weibo, expressing optimism about BYD’s expanding reach, which aims to cool the planet—one electric vehicle at a time.

Changzhou is BYD’s second car carrier after BYD Hefei, continuing the company’s tradition of naming vessels after the cities where its production sites are located. Built by CIMC Raffles, BYD Changzhou is a ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) ship, capable of transporting 7,000 vehicles, and symbolizes BYD’s dedication to increasing its export capabilities.

Boosting Export Potential with Dedicated Carriers

The introduction of BYD Changzhou represents a crucial step for the company in expanding its export potential. With rising global demand for electric vehicles, particularly in Europe, ensuring a smooth and efficient logistics process is essential. This vessel allows BYD to meet its growing overseas orders, bringing Chinese NEVs to new markets with greater efficiency and reduced reliance on third-party shipping companies.

The significance of BYD Changzhou’s launch is particularly noteworthy when considering the trajectory of BYD’s fleet. Earlier this year, BYD introduced its first car carrier, BYD Hefei—a 7,000-vehicle, dual-fuel automobile ro-ro vessel built by Guangzhou Shipyard International Co Ltd (GSIC). The introduction of these new vessels will not only enhance BYD’s ability to control the entire supply chain but also underscore its long-term commitment to being a key player in global EV logistics.

Meeting Demand in the European Market

With Europe rapidly adopting electric vehicles and tightening its emissions standards, BYD’s decision to expand its logistics fleet could not have come at a better time. The Changzhou vessel is a testament to BYD’s strategic focus on enhancing its global footprint. As Europe emerges as one of the largest markets for new energy vehicles, BYD is ensuring it can meet demand with an uninterrupted supply.

BYD’s Recent Market Performance

The introduction of BYD Changzhou follows an impressive streak of milestones for the company. In November 2024, BYD recorded sales of over 506,800 NEVs, marking the sixth consecutive month of record-high sales, and the second time it surpassed the 500,000 sales mark in a month. Additionally, BYD exported 28,141 vehicles from China in November, reflecting the company’s growing international presence.

Europe remains a significant market for BYD, with sales continuing to grow as consumers seek greener alternatives to traditional combustion engines. BYD sold 30,977 vehicles in overseas markets in November, demonstrating year-on-year growth, although slightly lower compared to October’s numbers. By launching vessels like BYD Changzhou, the company hopes to streamline its export process, enhancing the availability of its NEVs across key regions.

BYD’s Fleet Expansion Plan

BYD’s plans don’t stop with the Changzhou. The company has ambitious goals to operate a total of nine car carriers in the next two years, enabling it to move substantial volumes of vehicles across continents. This move will provide BYD with a logistical advantage, giving the company control over how its products reach key international markets. The Changzhou, measuring 199.9 meters in length, is part of this fleet expansion and represents BYD’s ongoing investments in infrastructure to support its soaring production.

The decision to invest in dedicated carriers underscores BYD’s foresight. As global competition in the electric vehicle sector intensifies, having dedicated logistical capabilities can be a game-changer. BYD aims to stand out not only with its innovative products but also by ensuring their timely and efficient delivery worldwide.

The BYD Changzhou is much more than just a new car carrier; it’s a symbol of BYD’s growth, resilience, and strategic vision. As the company continues to expand its presence in the global electric vehicle market, having a strong logistics fleet is crucial to maintaining its momentum. With 5,000 NEVs on board, BYD Changzhou is set to make its mark in Europe, delivering vehicles that contribute to a greener planet and reaffirming BYD’s role as a leader in sustainable transport.
