This tool, available through AWS’s Bedrock hosting service, is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind solution in the fight against AI-generated errors.

Automated Reasoning Checks leverage a systematic approach to ensure the accuracy of AI model outputs. Customers upload data to establish a “ground truth”, a baseline of verified information. From this, the tool creates rules to assess the validity of AI-generated responses.

As models generate answers, the tool cross-references them with the ground truth. If a response veers into potential hallucination territory, the tool identifies discrepancies and offers a corrected answer. For transparency, it displays both the inaccurate output and the correct alternative, allowing customers to gauge how far off the model was.

Amazon’s solution isn’t just theoretical. It is already being adopted by clients like PwC, which is using the tool to create reliable AI assistants for its customers. According to Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of AI and Data at AWS, the service aims to address some of the biggest obstacles in deploying generative AI at scale, helping organizations transition AI applications into production with greater confidence.

AWS claims the tool uses logically accurate and verifiable reasoning, though it has yet to provide public data on its performance.

Amazon’s foray into addressing hallucinations is part of a larger industry trend. Competitors like Microsoft and Google are also rolling out features aimed at curbing inaccuracies in AI outputs.

  • Microsoft introduced a “Correction” feature earlier this year, flagging potentially incorrect AI-generated text.
  • Google’s Vertex AI platform allows customers to “ground” their models using external datasets, including third-party sources or Google Search results.

What sets Amazon apart is the real-time validation and the ability to show customers both the faulty and corrected outputs, fostering greater trust and transparency.

AI models are inherently statistical systems, designed to identify patterns in large datasets. They predict answers rather than provide definitive truths, which can lead to hallucinations when the prediction veers outside the margin of error.

While this is a known limitation of generative AI, tools like Automated Reasoning Checks represent a critical step toward improving the technology’s practical application and reliability.
